Winter Tour 2012 w/Lelia Broussard!

American Airlines has decided that the best way to get me from Boston to Nashville is through Miami.  And so, with the extra time, I Tumbl…

Winter Tour 2012

January is usually the month I spend hibernating, contemplating the possibilities of the new year, and maybe writing a few songs, but this year was different.  Instead of staying inward, I turned my attention to the road as I set off on a co-headlining tour with my new friend, the very talented, Lelia Broussard.

Lelia and I, after only meeting briefly once or twice, decided we would hop in the car, just the two of us, and play 25 tour dates in 27 days.  !?!?!  For obvious reasons, this could have been a disaster.  We would be spending nearly every waking moment with each other, so if our personalities clashed, there would have been no shortage of misery during the high-stress experience of touring.  As luck would have it, we are both easy-going people, and so we got along great.  I mean, except for the screaming matches.  And there was the one fist fight, and the trip to the emergency room, but whatever.  All water under the bridge.  Except for the pending lawsuit, but whatever.

No, seriously, we had a great time on tour.  The one major bummer for me was that, on the first night in Chicago, laryngitis took hold of me and I lost my voice for about a week and a half!  During the shows in Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Ames, St. Louis, Lawrence, and Oklahoma City, I sounded like a cross between Tom Waits, Robin Thicke, a sick bullfrog, and a 110-year-old man trying to sing.  It was not pretty.  Like, really… it was bad.  That said, we did have some fun times at those midwest shows, despite my croaking.  There were some memorable audience sing alongs and some enthusiastic crowds.  Thanks to everyone who came out to those shows for helping me sing, and for having sympathy and understanding.  I’ll come back with my voice next time.  I promise!

By the time we got to Texas my condition was turning around and Lelia and I began sitting in on each other’s sets.  For the rest of the the shows I sang and played on her song, “Shoot For The Moon,” and she lent her beautiful and powerful voice to my songs, “Even The Rain,” and “Further The Sky.”  It was truly a treat to sing with her every night.  I encourage you to check out Lelia’s music here.  She is a uniquely gifted singer-songwriter who is doing great things… and the right people are noticing.

Aside from seeing friends, fans, and places I love, the best thing about the tour for me was getting to play a full set of my own music for people who want to hear it.  This probably seems like a simple thing, but on most of my recent tours, I have played a short opening set or in someone else’s band.  This time, I got to play as long as I wanted, and I loved it!  It was wonderful to meet people who drove for hours, or took a plane flight to see the shows.  And I loved hearing people’s stories about how my songs have impacted their lives.  The whole experience was so enjoyable and humbling, and it reminded me of how fulfilling it is for me to do what I do.

Thanks to everyone who came out to see the shows.  Thanks to all of the merch volunteers and everyone who let us crash at their place.  You know who you are!  I hope everyone enjoyed the shows as much as I did.

So, what’s next?  West coast?

Much love to you all,

Gabe

What is one song that you wish you had written?

Paul Simon’s “Graceland.”

Hittin’ The Road

It’s me, Gabe. No, not my management, record label, or some computer program pretending to be me-it’s me. I want to take this time to say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported my music in 2011. If you bought my records, came to one of my shows, or passed the word on to someone about my music, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Your continued support enables me to do what I love everyday, and for that I am grateful.

I am excited for my upcoming tour this January with the talented Lelia Broussard! This will be my first time hitting some of these cities in a long time and I’m eager to see your familiar faces as well as some new ones at the shows! If one of the cities below is anywhere near you, take a break from your hibernation, put on your coats, warm up your cars, crank up the music, and head over to see me play a full set of MY music. You’ll be happy you did.

I wish you and yours a Happy New Year in 2012, and hope to see many of you soon!!

Peace and Love,
Gabe

Gabe! I know you're finished your tour but are you going to continue making blogs? (I think you should) haha. Also, any chance of a UK tour in the future? :-)

Hi!  I might be touring again in the UK in early March, but the dates aren’t finalized.  If/when they get confirmed, I will put them on my website.  http://gabedixon.com/tour  :-)

And re: blogs, I get too busy to do them sometimes, but I’ll keep ‘em coming from time to time.

All the best,

Gabe

Hey Gabe, Sorry to bother you again but could you please help me with the lyrics to "Strike"? There's one line that I can't work out and it really annoys me everytime I listen to it. Sorry to bother you again xx

No worries.  Here you go…

Strike

(Gabe Dixon/Iain Archer)

Lightning in your eyes but there’s no sign of rain

Gotta wonder why I haven’t seen you again

Everyday I look for a sign that you’re looking for me

Feels like you broke down my door in the night

Went through my stuff, every corner of my life

Now I think I know how a head-on collision can feel

Oh oh oh woh, oh oh oh woh oh

Oh oh oh woh, oh oh oh woh – oh – oh

Strike a match and light my heart up

Strike a chord and I will sing

Cause you got me lookin’ awestruck

So come on, and strike up all my dreams

You got me burnin’ like an iron in the fire

Bend me or break me just don’t leave me scarred

Every little cell in my body is singin’ for you

First time a saw you yeah it hit me deep down

Felt like a piano slamming straight into the ground

Pick up all the pieces and get me back in tune with you

Oh oh oh woh, oh oh oh woh oh

Oh oh oh woh, oh oh oh woh – oh – oh

Strike a match and light my heart up

Strike a chord and I will sing

Cause you got me lookin’ awestruck

So come on, and strike up all my dreams

Everything changes with just one strike

Everything changes with just one strike

Everything changes with just one strike you see

Oh, everything changes with just one strike

You know you don’t have to keep it all inside

One little spark can make a thousand more degrees

Strike a match and light my heart up

Strike a chord and I will sing

Cause you got me lookin’ awestruck

So come on, and strike up all my dreams

So come on, and strike up all my dreams

Thanks to Nashville’s Lightning 100 radio station for letting me crash their studios this month as the “Artist In Residence.”  I had a blast co-hosting shows and performing at charity events.  And it was always a trip to be driving around in my car and suddenly hear an ad like this one, created by DJs Wells Adams and Lt. Dan Buckley.  Very creative stuff.  It’s nice to have an independent radio station in my hometown that plays great music and supports local artists as much as WRLT does.  Way to go guys (and gals).

Happy new year everybody!

This just feels wrong, but I’m going to do it anyway.

This just feels wrong, but I’m going to do it anyway.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes video of me performing on Tennessee Mornings on Friday.  Despite the early hour and a bad cold, I think I managed to sing the song okay. ;-)  Thanks to Kelly Benton for the creative camerawork!

Could this be the coolest commercial ever?  ”Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by J.S. Bach … in the forest.  I think Bach would be very pleased.

It’s the end of the night at Shepherds Bush Empire. The production crew has cleared the stage and loaded out and I am alone in the room which, only a couple of hours before, teemed with the energy of a sold out crowd. I had a wonderful time in the UK, and this show was a great way to end the trip. Thanks to everyone who came to the shows for giving my music a chance and showing your appreciation. I hope to come back soon! Much love to you all.
